AirGhandi's Review of the AEA HP MAX MK2 Accessories – Magazine, Optics, Bipod & Suppressor
The AEA HP MAX MK2 is one of the best-known and most widely sold large-calibre air rifles in Germany. As a PCP air rifle in calibre .35 / 9 mm, it offers a compact design, a magazine system and a platform for which a wide range of accessories is now available. Anyone who has recently purchased an HP MAX MK2 quickly faces the question: which optic makes sense? Which magazine should I choose? Which ammunition? How do I attach a bipod? And which suppressor solution fits the rifle?
At jabolo.de, AirGhandi and his team have tested and evaluated a large number of combinations of air rifles, optics, mounts, ammunition and other accessories over the past years. On this page you will find the accessories that jabolo.de stocks for the HP MAX MK2 – including technical specifications and notes from AirGhandi's practical experience.
The AEA HP MAX MK2 at a Glance
The HP MAX MK2 is a PCP air rifle in calibre .35 / 9 mm. Despite this unusually large calibre, the German 7.5-joule version is capable of precise shooting according to AirGhandi – with the right ammunition playing a decisive role. The rifle comes with an 11 mm dovetail rail as standard and, thanks to its compact design, offers good conditions for an individually configurable setup.
AirGhandi's Recommendations on Ammunition for the HP MAX MK2
For the free German version of the HP MAX MK2, AirGhandi recommends starting with the JSB Exact Diabolo .35 / 9mm / 5.2g / 100pcs. These round-nose diabolo pellets weigh 5.20 g (80.25 grain) and are designed for high precision according to the manufacturer. AirGhandi describes them as a sensible starting point for precision shooting at 7.5 joules.
For legally configured, higher-powered systems, slugs are also available. jabolo.de stocks the ZAN Slugs 81 grain / .357HP (100pcs) and the ZAN Slugs 90 grain / .357HP (100pcs). The ZAN Slugs feature a hollow point which, according to the manufacturer, provides high stopping power even at lower velocities. The base is optimised to seal the barrel reliably. According to AirGhandi, which ammunition works best with an individual rifle can only be determined through direct testing.
Optics for the AEA HP MAX MK2 – Reflex Sight or Scope?
According to AirGhandi, the choice of optic depends primarily on the distances and situations in which the HP MAX MK2 will mainly be used.
Reflex Sight for Short Distances: Anschütz Optics Reflex Pro small (24x17)
Those who mainly shoot at short distances and prefer fast target acquisition may want to consider a reflex sight. jabolo.de stocks the Anschütz Optics Reflex Pro small (24x17). It features a fine 2 MOA dot that does not completely obscure the target even at slightly greater distances. The sight detects movement and switches on automatically. The sight window measures 24 × 17 mm, the housing is made of aluminium and the total weight is 42 g. Three reticle options are available (dot, circle, circle with dot), seven brightness levels and IP67 protection. The mount uses Picatinny/Weaver and the RMR footprint allows additional mounting options.
Note: This Anschütz Optics product currently comes with 10% cashback directly from Anschütz – simply upload your receipt and receive the refund. Terms and conditions of Anschütz Optics apply.
Scope for Greater Distances: Anschütz Optics CLASSIC 2-7x32
Those who want to shoot more precisely and at greater distances should consider a scope. The Anschütz Optics CLASSIC 2-7x32 offers variable magnification from 2x to 7x with a 32 mm objective diameter. Particularly relevant for air rifle shooters: parallax can be adjusted from as close as 4.6 m, making the scope useful even at very short distances. The tube diameter is 25.4 mm / 1". The reticle is a MIL Dot without illumination. The protection rating is IP-67 and the weight is 420 g. AirGhandi describes the Classic 2-7x32 as a compact and well-suited scope for the HP MAX.
Note: This Anschütz Optics product also comes with 10% cashback directly from Anschütz. Terms and conditions of Anschütz Optics apply.
The Right Mount for the HP MAX MK2
The HP MAX MK2 comes with an 11 mm dovetail rail as standard. Various mounting options are available for fitting a scope.
Adjustable Ring Mount for the 11 mm Rail
Those who want to mount directly on the 11 mm rail will find the Anschütz Optics variable ring mount, 1", adjustable, dovetail, screwed, two piece - 63603 at jabolo.de. It is suitable for 9–11 mm dovetail rails, made from 6061-T6 aluminium and height-adjustable. The tube diameter is 1" (25.4 mm). Recommended torque: 2.0 Nm at the ring, 3.4 Nm at the rail.
11 mm to Picatinny Adapter
Alternatively, the existing 11 mm rail can be converted using the UTG-1 adapter 11mm to Picatinny/Weaver. The aluminium adapter has a low profile and is supplied as a 2-piece set. It is suitable for red dots and single-ring mounts.
AirGhandi's Review of the Adjustable Picatinny Rail for the HP MAX MK2
Those who want to use larger magazines should consider the Picatinny Rail | adjustable | 11 mm to 21 mm | HP MAX 1 | HP MAX MK2 | up to 12-round magazines. This rail was developed specifically for the HP MAX MK1 and MK2. It mounts on the existing 11 mm rail and creates a full 21 mm Picatinny rail. It also provides sufficient clearance for magazines up to the 12-round version. An integrated adjustment wheel enables tool-free setting of the optic's cant angle. Material: 7075 aluminium, black anodised. AirGhandi considers this rail a sensible overall solution when optic and magazine capacity need to be coordinated.
Magazines for the AEA HP MAX MK2 – 8, 10 or 12 Rounds?
Three magazine options are available for the HP MAX MK2 at jabolo.de – all made from CNC-machined aluminium. According to AirGhandi, the right capacity depends on the desired setup: the larger the magazine, the more clearance is needed beneath the optic.
Magazine for AEA HP MAX MK1 & MK2 – 8 Shots
The Magazine for AEA HP MAX MK1 & MK2 / Bintac T9 – Cal.35 / 9 mm – 8 Shots is particularly recommended when the optic should be mounted as low as possible. It features an integrated lever lock that securely holds the magazine in position after insertion. The magazine is rated for semi-automatic operation up to a fill pressure of 180 bar. It accepts projectiles up to 14 mm in length and is inserted from the left side.
- Capacity: 8 rounds
- Calibre: .35 / 9 mm
- Material: CNC-machined aluminium
- Integrated lever lock
- Semi-automatic operation up to 180 bar
- Max. projectile length: 14 mm
Magazine for AEA HP MAX MK1 & MK2 – 10 Shots
The Magazine for AEA HPMAX MK1 & MK2 / Bintac T9 – Cal.35 / 9 mm – 10 Shots is, in AirGhandi's view, the classic middle ground: more capacity than the 8-round magazine without going straight to the maximum option. This magazine is also made from CNC-machined aluminium. The height is 53.4 mm – before purchasing, check whether there is sufficient clearance beneath the existing mount.
- Capacity: 10 rounds
- Calibre: .35 / 9 mm
- Material: CNC-machined aluminium
- Height: 53.4 mm, width: 17.7 mm
- Max. projectile length: 14 mm
- According to manufacturer: HP MAX Semi up to 160 bar
Magazine for AEA HP MAX MK1 & MK2 – 12 Shots
The Magazine for AEA HP MAX MK1 & MK2 / Bintac T9 – Cal.35 / 9 mm – 12 Shots offers maximum capacity. It is suited for longer shooting sessions with less frequent reloading. Also made from solid CNC-machined aluminium, it is designed for reliable projectile feeding. Due to its greater height, it should be checked before purchase whether there is sufficient clearance beneath the existing rail. The adjustable Picatinny rail mentioned above is particularly well suited for use with this magazine.
- Capacity: 12 rounds
- Calibre: .35 / 9 mm
- Material: CNC-machined aluminium
- Height: 53.4 mm, width: 17.7 mm
- Max. projectile length: 14 mm
- Not suitable for semi-automatic operation
Important note: All three magazine variants are compatible with AEA HPMAX MK1, MK2 and Bintac T9. They are inserted from the left side. Loading is counter-clockwise; operation is clockwise.
Attaching a Bipod to the HP MAX MK2
Since the HP MAX MK2 does not have a classic long Picatinny rail at the front, a suitable interface is first required for bipod mounting. jabolo.de recommends the Saber Tactical 52mm Bottle Clamp for this purpose. It attaches to the bottle, with a rubber coating on the inside protecting the bottle from scratches. The underside features a Picatinny rail as a mounting point for accessories. The housing is made from 6061-T6 aluminium, matte black anodised. According to the manufacturer, the clamp fits AEA HP Max and Plus rifles.
Caldwell Accumax Carbon-BiPod, Picatinny
For a lightweight, high-quality bipod, the Caldwell Accumax Carbon-BiPod, Picatinny is available. It features quickly deployable carbon fibre legs, an omnidirectional ball mount for 360-degree panning and a twist-lock function for leg length adjustment. The weight is approx. 240 g; height is adjustable from approx. 15 to 23 cm. Mounting is via Picatinny rail.
MDT GRND-POD BiPod black, Picatinny
Those looking for a highly adjustable bipod will find extensive settings with the MDT GRND-POD BiPod black, Picatinny: independently adjustable legs, four locking leg positions (0°, 50°, 90°, 180°), a cant function with adjustable tension and one-handed operation of all functions. Height is adjustable from approx. 4.5" to 9". AirGhandi describes this bipod as well suited for frequent prone, precision-oriented shooting.
Suppressor for the AEA HP MAX MK2
To reduce the sound level when shooting in 9 mm calibre, a suitable suppressor adapter is required. For the German version of the HP MAX MK2, jabolo.de stocks the DonnyFL AEA HP MAX Adapter .357/.45/.50 AEA Challenger / .357. This aluminium adapter creates an M18x1 external thread and is compatible with the German version of the AEA HP MAX MK2.
The DonnyFL Emperor V3 / .308 .357 M18x1 - Schalldämpfer can be mounted on this external thread. It features a monocore design and is suitable for calibres .308 / .357 (9 mm). The suppressor thread is M18x1. An optional 6.5-inch extender (sold separately) can be screwed on. Please note: adapter and extender are not included in delivery.
AirGhandi points out that adapter, calibre and suppressor should be checked for compatibility before purchase. The combinations offered at jabolo.de are coordinated with each other. Please also inform yourself about the legal regulations regarding the use of suppressors on air rifles in your country.
A Possible Setup for the HP MAX MK2 – Based on AirGhandi's Experience
Based on his practical experience, AirGhandi describes two fundamental setups for the HP MAX MK2:
- Short distance, fast target acquisition: Anschütz Optics Reflex Pro small (24x17) + Magazine for AEA HP MAX MK1 & MK2 / Bintac T9 – Cal.35 / 9 mm – 8 Shots → compact, low-profile setup
- Greater distance, more precision: Anschütz Optics CLASSIC 2-7x32 + Anschütz Optics variable ring mount or adjustable Picatinny Rail + Saber Tactical 52mm Bottle Clamp + Caldwell Accumax Carbon-BiPod or MDT GRND-POD BiPod + DonnyFL adapter & Emperor V3 if needed
For ammunition, AirGhandi recommends starting with the JSB Exact Diabolo .35 / 9mm / 5.2g / 100pcs for the German 7.5 J version.
