Which air rifle is right for you?

Before choosing an air rifle, it's worth thinking about a few basics: do you just want to have fun shooting, are you after precision, or do you want a powerful big-bore rifle? How much does the drive system matter to you, and which caliber should it be? These are exactly the points our Air Rifle Advisor asks about, filtering our entire range accordingly.

PCP/pre-charged pneumatic or spring-piston – what's the difference?

PCP air rifles (Pre-Charged Pneumatic) are filled with compressed air using a hand pump or a compressor. The upside: almost no recoil, often a magazine for multiple shots in a row, and very consistent shot performance. The downside: you need extra equipment for filling.

Spring-piston and gas-piston rifles generate their energy when cocked – no filling, no extra pump required. In return, there's noticeable recoil on every shot, and most models are single-shot.

Which caliber should it be?

4.5mm (.177) is the classic beginner and all-round caliber: inexpensive ammunition, flat trajectory. 5.5mm (.22) hits with more energy and a bit more punch. From 6.35mm (.25) and 7.62mm (.30) onward things get noticeably more powerful, and with 9mm (.357) and 12mm (.50) you're in big-bore territory – here it's mostly about the powerful shooting experience.

Unrestricted from age 18, the "F" mark, and power tuning

All air rifles at jabolo.de are, in their standard configuration, unrestricted weapons (max. 7.5 joules muzzle energy) that you can buy and own from age 18 without a firearms possession permit (Waffenbesitzkarte). Some models also come with an export kit that lets you raise the power above 7.5 joules – however, in Germany this installation may only be carried out by holders of a gunsmith's manufacturing license, and owning a rifle modified this way then requires a permit. Other models allow separate aftermarket tuning, while others remain fixed at 7.5 joules. That's exactly what question 4 of our advisor asks about.

Single-shot or magazine?

Single-shot rifles are reloaded before every shot – classic, but a bit slower. Air rifles with a magazine let you fire several shots in a row without having to lower the rifle – handy for quick follow-up shots.

Classic or tactical?

Beyond the technology, looks matter too for many shooters: classic wood stocks in a hunting/sporter style, or modern, tactical designs with an adjustable chassis or bullpup silhouette. You can factor that in directly in the advisor as well.
