What does a silencer do on an air rifle?
A silencer (moderator) reduces the muzzle blast created as compressed air exits the barrel. It doesn't affect the mechanical firing noise itself (cocking or valve sound) – so a silencer makes your air rifle quieter, not silent. Handy if you're shooting on your own property, in the garden, or in the basement and don't want to disturb the neighbours.
Are air rifle silencers legal in Germany?
Yes – unlike firearm suppressors, a silencer for a licence-free air rifle or air pistol (F-marking, max. 7.5 joules) is not subject to any special authorisation in Germany. It doesn't fall under the strict rules that apply to suppressors on licensed firearms. The prerequisite is that the weapon itself is licence-free – more on the legal background in our article on the 2025 firearms law amendment (German only).
Which thread do I need?
By far the most common connection is 1/2"x20 UNF – most AirJoe models and many DonnyFL silencers fit directly onto common F-marked air weapons with this thread. Some larger systems like the AEA HPMax, AEA Challenger or AEA Megalodon use M18x1, and the AEA Zeus even uses M23x1. Always check your weapon's thread before ordering – a separate adapter is sometimes required.
Which calibre fits my silencer?
Silencers are manufactured calibre-specific, commonly available for 4.5 mm (.177), 5.5 mm (.22), 6.35 mm (.25) and 7.62 mm (.30), with some DonnyFL models going up to .45/.50. Important: if you're mounting the silencer onto a barrel shroud rather than directly onto the barrel, you usually need the next calibre size up.
Mono-core or multi-chamber design?
DonnyFL uses a mono-core design for most of its models: a continuous inner tube with no moving parts, which minimises the risk of pellet clipping and preserves maximum accuracy. AirJoe, on the other hand, uses a classic 3-chamber system with baffles and acoustic felt for strong noise reduction. Both designs have their place – mono-core for precision shooters, multi-chamber for maximum noise reduction.
